Nona Church
Nona Church - I became acquainted with three-dimensional art when I met my husband-to-be in 1983, in San Diego, California. He had several pictures that had been created by Margie Simpson. The pictures had always intrigued and fascinated me. After finally marrying in 1994, we made the decision to move to New Mexico when my Dad became ill. The following spring, an article in the paper caught my eye. It was about an up-coming arts and crafts show to be held at the State fair grounds and it listed the exhibitors. As I scanned the list, the name of Margie Simpson caught my eye. I enlisted a friend to go with me and we "lurked" around her booth until the crowds thinned out some. Come to find out, it was the very same lady that had done my husband's pictures. She came back to Albuquerque in the fall and taught a week's worth of classes. Margie came back two to three times a year after that, to offer classes and to sell art at the local crafts shows.
In 1997, I got the bright idea of keeping Margie's students together, and meeting once a month to work on our artwork, instead of waiting six months to get together. Hence, the ideal of the New Mexico 3D Art was born. We exhibit and sell our work at several craft shows in the fall of year. We petitioned the New Mexico State Fair for a division for 3D art in 1999. We have been very successful in raising people's awareness of this extremely old art form. We have a "demo day" every year.
I took Dee Overduin's last class in May of 2004, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and was certified on all three levels of the Paper Tole Institute's standards. In 2005, Dotty Maddox and I flew to Mt. Dora, Florida for the seminar held there, under the guidance of Marit Gabler, from Norway.
In 2007, we held the first ever paper tole seminar in the state of New Mexico and in 2009, we hosted the 2nd Worlds Paper Tole Exhibit and Workshops, held in Yuma, Arizona.
I've begun a "journey" with this thing called paper tole, not knowing where it will lead, but I know from the people I've met, the places I've traveled to, the art I have created, has brought me joy. And that is what I wish to bring to others!
